Board of Directors

  • Ginny Crothers

    Ginny Crothers

Ginny is from the Gulf coast of Florida, but has spent the last couple of decades in North Carolina, which she now calls home. She has lived in Beaufort for the last five years, since she moved here to pursue a Masters degree in coastal and marine environmental management at the Duke University Marine Lab on Pivers Island. Now she works as a GIS analyst and programmer for a consulting firm, focusing on the resiliency of our state's coastal communities and natural habitats.

Ginny's first road bike was a vintage celeste green Bianchi Veloce, which she still has and will never give away. In graduate school at Duke, she joined the Duke cycling team and jumped into road racing about two weeks after purchasing a carbon road bike and learning how to use clipless road pedals. While it was a steep learning curve, she had a lot of fun and even won a race. Since then, she has found joy riding the flat, windy roads of Beaufort and the surrounding areas of beautiful Carteret County.

  • Matt Hawkins

    Matt Hawkins

Matt is a native of the mountains of Virginia, but now resides in Cedar Point. He is a cyclist who enjoys road, gravel and mountain bike adventures. He is the owner of Ridge Supply, a cycling apparel company. He is the race director of the Croatan Buck Fifty gravel races here in the Croatan National Forest. As a father of three young children, he and his family spend their time outdoors as much as possible exploring the trails and roads our area has to offer.

  • Alex McCrary

    Alex McCrary

Alex is a native of Burlington, North Carolina now residing in Annapolis, MD. His family first purchased a cottage in Atlantic Beach in 1946 when his uncle, the owner of the Twin City Times, the local paper in those days, encouraged Alex's grandparents to come to the beach and enjoy the summer breezes. Since 1953, Alex has not missed a summer in Carteret County.

Alex has raced bicycles (way too exhausting!), worked in bike shops, cycletoured (including a 5,000 mile tour through Europe), and currently rides for fitness and fun. He is retired from running a real estate investment company and is a former CPA. Alex is married to a wife who shares his love of biking and has two grown children.

  • Joe Poletti

    Joe Poletti

Joe Poletti, principal of West Carteret High School, has ridden out of Morehead City for over 25 years. He is an education professional who has held leadership roles in all three county high schools, Central Services, East Carolina University, and the NC Dept of Public Instruction. Knowing well the county bike routes from east to west, he has seen first-hand the unprecedented growth in the area. That growth, combined with the ever-increasing popularity of bicycling, has spawned challenges and opportunities that CBI brings to the forefront. Joe and Lisa raised three children in Carteret and anticipate golden years ahead with Daisy Bellehaven, their Scottish Terrier.

  • Douglas Sherline

    Douglas Sherline

Douglas was born in Fairfax, VA and has lived in every state in along the Atlantic Coast from Maryland to Florida with the exception of South Carolina.  He has lived in the Morehead City area on two occasions.  The first was from 2002 to 2005 while the current stint has been since 2012.  Doug is married with three children and works as an engineer for Naval Air Systems Command at FRC East.

Doug has not stopped riding bikes since he started with the exception of his time at sea while enlisted in the U.S. Navy.  First there was the normal riding around the neighborhood as a small child.  This was followed by BMX in his early teen years.  At the age of 15, nursing a broken arm due to a BMX crash (I wasn’t very good), Doug watched coverage of the Tour de France in which Greg Lemond came back from a hunting accident to win by 8 seconds.  From then on, Doug was hooked on road cycling as well as BMX.  He competed in several TT events in high school, hanging up the competitive cleats when he joined the Navy.  While in the Navy, Doug was introduced to mountain bikes.  This discovery has led to countless hours and dollars riding and competing off road.  Today, Douglas rides the roads of Carteret County most days and gets out to the trails to the west with his family as often as he can.

  • Mike Taylor

    Mike Taylor

Mike is a native of eastern North Caroline who now resides with his wife Alice in Emerald Isle.  His career in education included 32 years in the NC community college system, the last 15 as president of Stanly Community College in Albemarle, NC.  He started bike riding after retirement and has completed Cycle NC’s Mountains to Coast ride seven times and has completed rides on the Erie Canal, Pittsburg to Washington DC on the GAP/C&O canal,  the entire length of the Blue Ridge Parkway and the Natchez Trace along with the Florida Keys.  He currently serves on the Emerald Isle Bike and Pedestrian Committee.

  • Tony Whipple

    Tony Whipple

Tony Whipple has been a resident of Atlantic Beach, NC since 2001. With a Master’s degree in physical oceanography, he has worked for the University of North Carolina’s Institute of Marine Sciences collecting and analyzing data and engineering novel data collection devices since his 2001 arrival in North Carolina. He began more serious cycling in high school with an entry level road bike and worked for a (very) short stint at a local bike shop. He re-introduced himself to the joys of riding bicycles in about 2008 when the demands of parenting allowed for it. He enjoys both riding locally and touring when possible (which is never enough).

  • Ken Zieleck

    Ken Zieleck

Ken Zieleck is a Pilot for Southwest Airlines. Originally from Houston Tx, he and his family settled in Morehead City after 20 yeas as a United States Marine Corps Aviator. Ken began running running marathons in 2001 and is on a trek to run a marathon on all seven continents. In 2016 he started bicycling and swimming and began entering Half and Full Ironman triathlon events. His wife Angela has completed several Half Ironman events as well. Ken and Angela enjoy the local bicycling routes on the Crystal Coast and are always looking for new bicycle routes up and down the east coast.
